Due to high demand I’ve introduced something that I wish I had access to when
I was playing in high school and into college age. It can be a lonely lacrosse
goalie world out there when you’re on your own and many goalies
parents, and coaches have asked if there was a way to talk to me live.
And now there is.
There may be a time when you just really want to get someone on the phone
to talk to about your lacrosse game. I get requests all the time from
players, coaches and parents looking for some quick fixes. Sometimes they
just want to talk to a coach who understands goalies. Other times they have
a technical question they want some clarification. Coaches want
to talk about how to incorporate their goalies in drills better.
Here’s a partial list of just some of the topics we can cover in a
phone consultation:
- Getting ready for the season.
- Big game coming up.
- Coach issues.
- Fear of the ball.
- Not stepping.
- Recruiting.
- Getting pressure from a backup goalie.
- Equipment questions.
- What camps to go to.
- Advanced goalie play.
- Strength and conditioning issues.
- And much more.
Who Needs Phone Coaching?
if you are on a team that does NOT have a goalie specific coach, you
probably need a phone consultation. I find it tragic that the most important
player on the field does not have the ability daily to have their performance
critiqued. Even if you do have a goalie specific coach you may find it helpful
to talk to me just once to clarify or confirm anything that your coach is telling you.
You may know that I was also an Olympic athlete in a completely
unrelated sport to lacrosse. I would spend my winters in far off lands and
then return to school in the spring to focus in on lacrosse. That time away from the
lacrosse is what I feel gave me a competitive advantage and ultimately led
me to becoming a High School All American. But the one thing I did the most
while I was competing in the winter was to talk with my coach back
in the U.S. via the phone.
But didn’t you have coaches with you on your team? You bet I did. But I didn’t
really “click” with them. I needed someone who could understand me, so I found
someone I could talk to on the phone. We usually touched
base once a month. But there were times when we spoke once a week.
I was able to bounce ideas off of him, vent about some issues, and make plans
for improvement.
There were times we would talk and I didn’t really need any immediate help.
I just needed someone to talk to. It was a great way for me to stay on track.
My coach was able to help me see things coming that I wasn’t
really prepared for. He helped me to manage my training, and my recovery.
He helped me to relax during stressful times, and kept me accountable when
I was screwing up. It was a huge help.
Talking To My Parents Wasn’t Always The Answer
It’s nice to think that a lacrosse goalie can just go to good ol’ mom or dad
for advice. But unless that parent was a lacrosse goalie, talking from goalie
to parent can just aggravate things. It can make an already tense
situation even more tense. And we don’t want that. The goalie-parent
relationship should really stay mom-kid or dad-kid. Unless the parent is an
active coach it can get heated. That’s where I can come in. A forty-five
minute phone call can solve a lot of lacrosse-specific problems that can’t be
solved at the dinner table.
Technology Has Changed Everything
I get emails asking me for recommendations on “goalie coaches” in peoples home
town. And to be honest, my answer is always the same, I can be your goalie coach
in your area. I’m just not “in” your area. But with the power of the internet I’ve
been able to help coaches from around the world. Why not you?
So whether you’re a parent, a coach, or a goalie, we can be a team. I can be your
secret weapon as I am for other goalies. I’ve always wanted to grab testimonials
about phone coaching, but to be honest, goalies don’t want other goalies to know
that they are getting coached by me. They don’t want them to know that I’m the guy
behind the scenes helping them get better day in and day out.
Had a bad game? I can give you a perspective on winning and losing that will get
you back on track.
Big game coming up? Let’s break it down and focus on you playing the best
you can play.
Coach, teammates, or parents stressing you out? Been there. Done that.
Thinking about trying to get recruited for college? I can share with you my
experience having gone through that process and how to do it yourself.
Can We Talk?!
As I mentioned before, sometimes a phone call with me is just that, a phone
call. Nothing specific. It’s just good to get on the phone with someone who
understands your position and who can speak to you in “goalie speak”
