Stepping To The Ball DVD

Stepping to the Ball DVD Cover

The DVD I was forced to make.

I was literally forced to make this DVD by a parent in California.  The conversation went something like this,

“Do you have any DVD’s?”

“No, I don’t.  I need a field.  And three goalies. And six cameras.  And a tower to shoot it all from.”

“No you don’t.  Just get in your backyard and shoot the thing.  My son needs to learn how to step to the ball better.  And fast!”

“Ok.  I can do that.”

And so it began.  With what started out as another way to coach a goalie from a distance I literally pulled out my net and shot it in my backyard.  And to be honest…in the backyard is where you’re going to get better.

I’ve seen all the goalie coaching DVD’s out there.  And sure, it’s great to have some All-American goalie getting shots taken on him on field turf.  It looks so pretty and easy.  Bounce shots going right where you’d expect them to.  Goalies picking off balls on their off-stick hip.  Nice and clean.  It all looks so easy. Not to mention they are all in the latest gear and look all shiny.

But in reality it’s not like that at all. It’s you getting shot on by a buddy from too far, or too close, in hand-me-down equipment possibly given to you by your school.

Or maybe you’ve got all the shiny new gear. But it won’t help you at all if you can’t move to the ball properly.

So in this video I break it all down.  It’s like me being in your backyard showing you just how you need to move to the ball.  This is probably THE most important thing you can learn as a goalie.  The Stepping to the Ball DVD is the foundation to everything you do from here on out as a goalie. If  you are stepping wrong then you’re on a path for disaster.  You may be able to make up for bad stepping now, but as the shots get faster and the level of competition you play gets better, those bad steps are going to catch up with you. The kids who learn the tips on this video will beat you later.

In this video I fix everything you thought you already knew about stepping to the ball by giving you the ultimate discussion on stepping to the ball. No other DVD has this type of discussion on this one topic.

In this DVD I talk about everything from your basic set up to the most difficult shot to save, the off-stick hip, and off-stick low shots.  In this DVD you will be given the tricks to:

  • Finding your perfect stance and why finding the stance that is perfect for you will make all the difference in stopping more balls faster than ever before.
  • The one mistake both tall and short goalies make while learning to become a lacrosse goalie and why it can
screw up your game for a long time.  Most goalies don’t understand this.
  • The reason you may not be getting into your perfect stance and how to fix it.
  • Why I wanted to title this DVD “Moving to the Ball” and not “Stepping to the Ball.”
  • How to use your off-stick hand to make critical saves.
  • Why most goalies would stop more balls without using a stick at all.  This one mental “cue” helped me stop
more balls and get noticed by more coaches.

Those are just some of the tips in the first ten minutes of the DVD.  Again, this is you and me in the backyard talking shop.  I
share the nuggets that I’ve learned from coaches over twenty years of playing the sport.

I then get into the meat of the DVD when we start talking about actually moving to the ball. I go over the eight main areas that you need to stop and how to move to those spots efficiently.  Remember, you’re trying to move something (hopefully your stick) in front of the ball before it crosses the goal line.  But how you move to the ball will either make that quick, or dreadfully slow. You choose.

We’ll reveal:

  • The three keys to making any save.
  • Why it’s sometimes better to train with a basketball or a volleyball than a lacrosse ball.
  • The one drill recommended by more coaches that I actually hate.  Can’t stand it at all.  It’s a bad habit teacher.  Use it at your own risk and don’t come calling when you’re full of bad habits.
  • How to move to both off-stick hip shots.  Did you know there were two?
  • Why you need to “get ugly” on low shots.
  • The “Flashlight” technique and how to use it to stop more low shots.
  • Why you’re going to give up more rebounds to your off-stick side and how to be prepared when you do.
  • How to stop shots taken right at you.
  • And much more!

So that’s just a few of the things that I talk about in that section.  I can’t give you bullets for everything because this letter would just be huge then.

This DVD Might Make You Angry

But a word of warning, some of the ideas I talk about here are a little controversial.  I was never one to just take information I was taught and just run with it.  As a goalie I always questioned things and what I’ve done here is distilled everything I’ve learned on the topic of stepping to the ball into one easy DVD.
